Ride Description:

Since I was planning a ride through Challis for the same timeframe as what Ed has now posted for the Annual Club Ride, I decided to just leverage off this event and post a formal ride if anyone is interested in picking up a couple northern area sites on the way.  Yes it is out of the way, but does make a nice loop.  Based on who signs up and feedback, I can tweak the details a little but just wanted to get the general ride out there.

Anyway, the details as follows:  (note road numbers are from Benchmark maps)

This ride will cover challenge sites of #4 Heavens Gate Trail, #40 Elk City, and #42 Magruder 14mi Trail Camp since those are the ones I am missing from Northern Idaho area.  Optional side trips along Magruder might include Burnt Knob Lookout, Magruder Massacre Site, and Hells Half Acre Lookout.

Wednesday:  Leave after work and just take pavement (55/95) up to Heavens Gate area.  Looks like there are several camp sites on the road up to Heavens Gate.  About 160mi of pavement.  I know, not that fun, but need to get to the good stuff I have never seen before.

Thursday:  Gas up in Riggins and continue pavement to Grangeville (top off gas?) and also to Elk City.  Need to find out if have gas in Elk City.  From Elk City drop down 222 to Red River Guard Station and start of the Magruder Corridor.  Follow the Magruder all the way to Montana.  The plan is to camp along the Magruder depending on where we end up late in the day or when people have had enough.  I would like to make it all the way to Painted Rocks Lake or even Horse Creek Hot Springs in Montana, but know that is a bit of an aggressive goal. Since I have never done the Magruder, I don't want to rush this section.  About 100 mi of pavement and 100mi of dirt if we make it to Painted Rocks Lake.

Friday:  Pop out to Darby for gas and then back to Painted Rocks.  Drop down through Alta, Horse Creek Pass (side trip to check out Horse Creek Hot Springs for a quick soak or at least future reference) and either take 123 or 038/030 down to Panther Creek Rd.  Follow Panther Creek all the way down until it pops out onto Hwy93 about 10 miles north of Challis.  Gas up in Challis and head to the Hot Springs to meet up with the group.  My understanding is Panther Creek is a fast gravel road so Challis arrival time could be as early as about 3pm but more likely closer to 5 or 6pm.  Distance on the day is about 200 miles, mostly dirt/gravel.

Above timeline is just an estimate and subject to change based on side excursions along the Magurder, etc.  I set this ride at level 3 because of distance per day and the pace will be "brisk" between the "smell the roses" stops.  Also some of the lookouts tend to be steep, narrow, rocky roads.  Most road conditions are probably level 2 or less (pavement).  Since I have not done any of the leg from Elk City all the way to Challis, not sure what to expect along the way.  I head there was some washouts on Magruder, but that they are OK now at least for bikes??

Added GPX with estimated route.  (Be warned I do not have auto routing software so my GPX route is manual; based on hard waypoints from looking at the topo software.)
