Ride Description:

Here's a chance to hit 8Challenge points. They're the last 8 need so I'm going to hit them all at once. I want to be very clear ~ this will be a level 5 ride at some points, but you can bail out of those sections to keep it a level 4 ride for you (read the description for further explination). The rest of the ride will be a solid level 4 ride, due to the pace and the milage.

Day 1, we'll leave from the Shell Station after work. We'll head up 8th St to Eagleson, hang a left on Clear Creek, cut over to Thorn Creek, and up the Middle Fork of the Boise to stay the night at TroutCreek Campground. Loftus Hot Springs are just 2 miles up the road, for a good soak. About 70 miles that evening after work ~ nearly all of it dirt.

In the morning, we'll up to FS255 and cut over to FS129 to FS156 which will take us to Rocky Bar. Then South on FS156 to Pine for fuel. Then up FS129 to Trinity. FS183 will get us back through Featherville, then FS227 out to Indian Head. We'll likely hit Iron Mt Lookout on th way, which is 10-15 miles in on two track (level 5 stuff) and the same coming back out. If someone doesn't want to run it, they can hang out with our gear while those who want to run it to so. Then If we're short on time, we'll stay at the Worswick Hot Springs, but I'd prefer to press into Ketchum for fuel them north on Hwy 75 to stay the night at Russian John's Hot Springs (or as close as we can get to them). This is about 85-90 degree hot springs, which is just warm enough to get the sweat and dirt off of us. About 190 miles on the day, excluding the Iron Mt run. 3 Challenge points that day.

Next day, we head upp Hwy 75 to turn off for Black Rock Mine. I'm told there's some big-bike-friendly single track getting there, which I intend to run on my KTM950. Those who don't want to run this section, are advised to skip it. Then back down to the highway, to the Aztec Mine turn off. I've never been on the Black Rock Rd, nor the Aztec Mine Road, so I don't know what to expect ~ know your abilities and ride your own ride and your own comfort. Back to Hwy75 to get fuel in Stanley. From there, we're going to take a side trip up Joe's Gultch, which is a solid level 4 climb... pushing level 5. If you want to bypass it, that's ok too, I can point to to where you'll intersect up later... or you could just run Hwy 21 to Cape Horn where we'll end up. After Joe's Gultch, we'll cross Valley Creek which can be deep and swift, so bring your A game. Then up FS029 to Cape Horn. We'll run FS579 into Bear Valley, and drop down FS591 to get to Deadwood Res. We'll stay the night at Deadwood. Thane and I are likely to run some single track up to the hot springs, for anyone one who'd like to go that evening. Those who want to stay at camp and relax/fish are encouraged to do so. About 150 miles on the day, with 4 Challenge points bagged.

Sunday, we'll head north on FS555 to just south of Landmark, then east on FS437 up Pistol Creek. I've never been on this road before, and don't have any idea of what to expect. We'll get our pic around Artillery Dome, then head west to Cascade. I'll likely hit Hwy 55 home. 200 miles on Sunday, but a big chunk of that is pavement getting home. 1 Challenge point down.

So... there you have it. 8 Challenge points in a long weekend (plus Friday) ride.

Email me if  you're interested, and I'll send you the route. Check back often if you're going, as plans often change...
