Description:

The Indianola Forest Service Ranger Station adjacent to Berry Creek was originally built in 1909, remodeled by the Civilian Conservation Corp in the 1930s, and was one of the oldest helicopter fire attack bases in the United States.  There are no interpretive or other public facilities at Indianola.  It served as a helicopter base for wildland firefighting for over 40 years.  However, this facility was never constructed as a helibase.  While there has never been a major accident at the facility, there have been a number of near misses.  In 2007 the helicopter fire fighting operation at Indianola Field Station was moved to the Salmon Airport.  There is a memorial the Indianola Station to two helitack crew members who lost their lives in the 2003 Cramer fire.
