Description:

Hidden Lake is a lake located just 24.4 miles from West Yellowstone, in Madison County, in the state of Montana, United States, near Missouri Flats (historical), MT.  The easiest way in is to take NF-053 off of US-20  south of Henry’s Lake.  Continue on NF-053 to Elk Lake Road, then proceed north to Elk Lake Lodge.  Continue northeast past the West side of Elk Lake until you come to a turn-around about 1/4 mile from the southwest end of Hidden Lake.  There is a hiking trail that takes you the rest of the way to the GPS coordinates on the lake shore.  An alternative route that takes you a lookout point about 1,000 feet above the Northeast end of Hidden Lake is accessed via NF-230 off of Montana Highway 87 northwest of Henry’s Lake.  Follow NF-230 to the East end of Conklin Lake, then take the two-track road heading north around Conklin Lake to Hidden Lake Bench about 4 miles to the West at an elevation of 7,450 feet (about 1,000 feet above Hidden Lake).  This is a more primitive two-track road and a more difficult route than the first one list above.

Check-Ins for this Challenge Point

Photo taken August 11.  We approached this site from the south off of Red Rock Pass Road (NF-053) and turning north on NF-056 (part of the Continnental Divide Trail) followed by an ATV trail that led northwest around the Hidden Lake Bench to the overlook on cliffs nearly 2,000 feet above the east side of Hidden Lake.  It was a spectacular view.  We took the ATV trail due east from the overlook to NF-230 and Hwy-87.  Both routes are steep, rocky and technical, especially the more direct one to the east we took coming out.  Two of us werre on large bikes (Triumph Tiger 800), and it was very difficult.  Would have been much easier on smaller bikes, which the others rode.
