On the Oregon side (west) of the Snake River opposite the Kleinschmidt Grade, Hess Road climbs straight up out of Hells Canyon along 7 steep miles with multiple sharp switch-backs and some significant exposure.  The views are spectacular.  This road is very difficult to negotiate when wet.  Jason Abbott (one of our own) provides good photos and a  description of Hess Road in his Trailimage post below.

The Sign for Hess road down at the bottom near the Snake River is gone on this side, so if you don't already know where Hess Road is, you might have trouble finding it...  We tried to go up Hess road to connect with the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway... but my buddy did not have knobbies on his 1200 GS and after two spin outs that resulted in falls for him, we bagged and went the other way... the road was always steep, but now it has been graded and is loose and nasty... the Tenere did fine with the knobbies I have on it...
