Ride Description:

Let's get to the 3rd Annual IAMC Event a day early! Enroute, we will visit three 2010 IAMC Challenge sites (Pilot Peak, Graham Guard Staion, and Custer), as well as do at least one water crossing (Valley Creek outside Stanley, one of my favorites). We will leave from the Boise Little Theater Parking lot at 12:00 noon, head up Rocky Canyon and take the Ridge Road at Aldape Summit.  From there it is down Toll Gate Road, up over Robbie Creek and Clear Creek Roads to Grimes Creek Road and back toward Highway 21.  Just before Highway 21, we will head up Wildcat Gulch into Idaho City and then up Bear Run over Freeman Peak on to Pilot Peak.  We will then head down to Highway 21 and take NF-312 to the Graham Guard Station.  From there we back track about 13 miles to the Jackson Peak Lookout Road (branch on NF-312) and then take a single track about 1-1.5 miles down to Richard's Creek Road and back to Highway 21 near The Haven Restaurant.  It is then on up Highway 21 to Cape Horn Road, over NF-203 and 682, crossing Valley Creek (water crossing), and then NF-633 into Lower Stanley.  From there we head up Highway 75 to Sunbeam and then take NF-013 to the Yankee Fork Dredge, followed by NF-070 through Custer to Challis and then on to the Challis Hot Springs. Most of this route is an easy level 2 with the exceptions of the upper portion of Bear Run over Freeman Peak to Pilot Peak and the Valley Creek water crossing which I think deserve a level 3.  The 1-1.5 miles of unknown single track from Jackson Peak down to Richard's Creek Road is listed on the National Boise Forest Map as open on two-wheeled vehicles, but could be a level 3 or 4.  Anyway, it will be an ADVENTURE!!  In the worse case, it will be an impasse requiring us to back track all of NF-312 to Highway and up to Cape Horn (adding about 38 miles to the route).  I have ridden most of this route on a KTM 990 but will be taking my DRZ-400 due to the unknown section of single track.  If you want to take a larger bike, but are uncertain about the single track, you can back track all of NF-312 and meet the rest of the group at The Haven in Lowman. Gas and food are available in Idaho City, Lowman, Stanley and Challis.  We will be leaving late (12:00 noon) and have 230-250 miles of almost all dirt/gravel to cover, so we will need to move along at a pretty good pace to get to the  Challis Hot Springs before dark. Please give me a call if you have any questions.
