Placerville received its name because of placer mining in the vicinity. The Ghost Town[2] is located 17 miles East of Horseshoe Bend. The townsite was selected December 1, 1862; and by December 16 there were 6 cabins in the camp. By the early summer of 1863, the the town had 300 buildings and a population of 5,000. At the meeting of the first legislature held in Lewiston in 1863, the citizens obtained a charter for their city. Father Mesplie, a Catholic priest, held the first church service January 4, 1864, and in that same year a stage line was estabilished between the Basin and Walluato carry Wells Fargo express. It ran every other day from Placerville and went through in four days. By July 1864, 4500 claims had been recorded in the that district

I rode with some street bike friends to Idaho City this morning. They rode back on the pavement; I decided to tag Placerville and Pearl on my way home.

The ride to Placerville was pretty. The roads were freshly graded and very easy. Oncoming traffic was considerate; and the roads were well marked.

Placerville is a really friendly place. I had three locals come over and say hello, ask about my bike and why I was taking a picture. They also commented on my wearing a helmet (approval) which surprised me until I remembered that Idaho is a helmet optional state.

Bottom line: I'll definitely be riding up this way again!

Next stop, Pearl!

Great group ride led by Mark Fiechter.  Traveled via Rocky Canyon, Robie
Creek, New and Old Centerville to Placerville.  This was followed by a valiant effort to reach Hawley Mountain peak but we were blocked by some significant snow drifts near the destination.  Our return was via the Ridge Road to Bogus Basin.
