Leaving Guerber Park, I headed west on State St through Star and Middleton, grabbed some fuel at the Sinclare station south of Farmway, then headed west on HWY 26. After cruising through Notus, I got on HWY 95 south through Fern, then Headed west again on Red Top Rd. Crossing the OR/ID border, Red Top turns into OR 454/453. I followed 454/453 to the T-junction with OR-201; turned south, and proceeded about .4 miles to a dirt road on the right with a green BLM gate. Closing the gate behind me I had nothing but sandy jeep trails and short rocky sections ahead of me until I got to the Owyhee River. Things went smoothly until they didn’t. I found myself on the east side of the Owyhee river with a 50-yard ford between me and the Owyhee Lake Rd (pavement) that would take me to the Challenge Site. Since I was by myself and had no idea how deep the water might get, I decided to clutch the bike across while walking beside it. The deepest area was just above my knees, but that was about three inches higher than my boot-tops. Boots full of water and feet freezing cold, I exited the ford, put the bike on its side-stand, removed my boots, and tried to rub some feeling back into my feet. Failing at the warming attempt, I got my gear back on and headed south on pavement to Site 23 – the Owyhee Tunnel.
