Ride Description:

Gary and I have been saving some of the challenge points around Cascade for the weekend of the Club Ride.  Since no one has offically posted a ride for this weekend, Gary and I have taken it upon ourselves.  So here it is....

Challenge Points..... Horsethief res, Stolle Creek Guard Station, Whiskey Cabin, Yellow Pine, Elk Summitt.

Should be a ride that almost any size dual sport with an accomplished rider can complete.

Posted as a level 3 because of the overall distance and time to complete.  The roads are level 2 some paved and gravel, but the pace is more of a level 3.  This is a goal focused ride of going the distance and getting the challenge points....  If you are not interested in challenge points or worried about overall distance and time this may not be the ride for you.  Idahosam has a ride planned for saturday that covers most of the same points but is shorter in time and distance (see comments in annual club ride report).

Fuel may not be available so you need to be perpared for 220 miles if you do whole route.  I will be packing extra fuel for Gary and myself as my range is about 150 and Gary's is around 180.  The owner of the store and cafe in Yellow Pine usually has 5 gallon cans of fuel for sale.  If you are unable to pack fuel, have limited range with gas tank, and there is no fuel in Yellow Pine, you would need 160 mile range without the Elk Summitt point (see ride description below).

Need to leave at 8am, could take a full 12 hours to complete.  Will be cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon so dress appropriately.  Lunch or late lunch in Yellow Pine, bring water and snacks for the road.

Leave at 8am, stop in Cascade so everyone can top off gas tanks.  Take Warm Lake road.  Take Horsethief turn-off get pic go back to Warm Lake Rd.  Take Stolle Meadows turn-off get pic at Guard Station go back to warm lake rd.  Go past warm lake, road turns into  Landmark Stanley rd #579 to Landmark. Go south on Landmark Stanley rd #579 get pic at Whiskey Cabin.  Go north on Landmark Stanley rode #579 back to Landmark then continue onto Johnson Creek rd #413,  take all the way into Yellow Pine.  Lunch break at Yellow Pine, get pic,  and evaluate everyone's fuel range at this time.  Go east of Yellow pine on rd #412, turn north onto rd #430 towards Big Creek. Continue on rd #430 to Elk Summitt, get pic, then reverse route back to Yellow Pine.  This leg of the journey is 64 miles form Yellow Pine to Elk Summitt and back to Yellow Pine.  From Yellow Pine take rd #412 west towards McCall.  Turn south at the South Fork Salmon River rd #674 towards Warm Lake.  Rd #674 turns into rd #474 and drops you out by Warm Lake.  Go West on Warm Lake road back to Cascade.  220 miles total or 160 if you don't do Elk Summitt.

I am very familiar with all of these roads, will have maps with us, and Gary has GPS with waypoints entered..  GPS cordinates are posted on the Challenge Sites Forum if you wish to look them up.  You can click on the link below to view a map with detailed directions thanks to Gary and Google.  Gary has perpared these maps for our rides this summer and the time seems to be fairly accurate in the long run.  The actual drive time is a lot less, but with the food and picture breaks the overall time is fairly close, although we are generally slightly less than google's estimate.,+ID&daddr=Horsethief+Reservoir,+ID+to:Nat+for+Dev+Rd+22%2FWarm+Lake+Rd+to:n44+35.126+w115+40.657+to:Unknown+road+to:n44+36.
