Ride Description:

Earlier this summer I completed the Continental Divide Trail ride from Antelope Wells, NM, to about 40 miles north of Ashton, ID, where my bike broke down, and I had to haul it back to Boise to fix it.  I am now ready to complete the Montana portion of this ride (approximately 750 miles) to Roosville, BC, on the US-Canadian border.  This motorized trail follows the official Adventure Cycling Association CDT with the exception of a few short single-track segments that are bicycle only.  This trail follows mainly forest service roads and a few highways that either cross or are on the continental divide from the Canadian to the Mexican border.  Most of the trail is a level 2 with a few short technical sections that are level 3.  I have listed this ride as a level 3 because of the length of the ride and the distances we will be traveling each day.

Baker's Tank going over Boreas Pass near Breckenridge, CO

Day 1:  Meet at the Trolley House Cafe at 7:00 AM for breakfast - on the road by 8:00 AM.  Our destination is Macks Inn, ID (332 miles).  We will get there via Hwys 20 & 33 through Mountain Home, Fairfield, Carey, Arco, Rexburg.  We will go past Craters of the Moon (2011 Challenge Site #-31) along the way.  If time permits, we can also visit Mesa Falls (2011 Challenge Site #-32).

Day 2:  A few miles from Macks Inn we will pick up the CDT were my bike broke down earlier this summer.  From here our ride will be mostly dirt into Butte, MT (about 300 miles).  We will pass Red Rock Lakes and Bannack City (2011 Challenge Sites #-30 & 32).

Day 3:  From Butte we will travel to Kalispell, MT (about 287 miles), again mostly dirt.

Day 4:  From Kallispell we will travel to the US-Canadian border at the Roosvill, BC port of entry.  We will not enter Canada, so no passports are needed.  It is about 132 miles from Kalispell to Rooseville.  From the border we will travel to Missoula via Hwy 93 (192 miles) for a total of 324 miles.

Day 5:  From Missoula, MT, we will travel Hwys 93, 75 & 21 back to Boise via Salmon, Challis, Stanley, Lowman and Idaho City (about 386 miles).  We will pass near Dagger Falls, Hindman Lake, Grandjean, Banner Mine, and Little Beaver Creek (2011 Challenge Sites #-4, 25, 27, 28, & 29) should we have the time and desire to visit them as well.
