Check-Ins for this Challenge Point

War Eagle still has some snow on the road.  Mike and I got close enough to get a shot of the towers.

There is an easy way up to here and there is a HARD way.  I took the hard way up and the easy way down.  The Hard way has a deep (for me) water crossing and a gnarly rock climb but then levels out to a nice 4-wheeler path.

Alas, I couldn't make it all the way to the top (which I could see from where I took this photo) due to the snow bank covering the road.  I'm guessing that about 2 weeks of warm weather will clear out this snow bank though.

I almost made it to the top but that last little bit of snow covered, steep, rutted road did not look very inviting.

Well apparently I took the hard way up the very rocky, loose, and steep trail.  I kept thinking, - no way is this level 2.  I got about 3/4 of the way up, and ran into steep rock "steps" I did not want to descend, so I parked and huffed up the remainder (hence the face in the photo).  When I got to the top, it appeared that a much better road extended at a moderate slope down to the west.  Review of aerial photos showed the latter to be the correct road - I think.  Nonetheless it was a tremendous ride and beautiful even with the pall of smoke.

It was a beautiful day with brilliant fall colors and only a hint of smoke visible over the distant mountains to the north.  Immediately to the south, you can look down onto the After Thought Mine where there still appears to be some activity.
