30-Grimes-Pass-Cemetery

Description

Tucked high on Grimes Pass (around 6,000+ ft) in Boise County near Pioneerville, the historic Grimes Pass Cemetery is a quiet, reflective stop for adventure motorcycle riders.

Named after gold discoverer George Grimes (killed in 1862 by Native Americans while prospecting), this small pioneer burial ground holds early Boise Basin miners and settlers amid pine-dotted hills. Dual-sport and ADV riders on forest roads from Idaho City or Garden Valley detour here for a quick history break, photos of old graves, and panoramic views before tackling rugged backcountry routes. Respect the site, pack in/pack out, and ride safe.

I forgot that I was looking for a cemetery when I arrived at my GPS pin. I saw the sign did the short hike and I’m glad I did because it’s a nice little cemetery in a very remote place.

There are two access points, and if you blink, you'd miss both. Riding north, there's a sign (see pic). You can stop there and walk up the steep trail, or, if you continue up to the hairpin and the road split, there's another entry point. The hairpin would be the better spot for a group to stop, as there is more space. Grimes Pass on the way down to Crouch is a bit sandy in places and would need care on a big bike. I'm giving this a 3 because of this. Small bikes would have no issues, but it would still be a 2.5.

This is more of a 2 plus just cause the road is pretty rough. Couldn't think of a better place to RIP. Sensational view of the Southfork
