27 – Lowman Historical Marker
From HMDB.com:
In 1907, Nathaniel W. Lowman settled here, and four years later, when he started a post office in his large log house, this community was named for him.
Only a few scattered settlers lived here then. Lowman got all its supplies once a year from a large freight wagon over a state road built in 1894 to provide access to North Idaho. This highway followed in 1939. Eventually a one-room schoolhouse was moved here from Garden Valley. It still serves Lowman.

Check In
Use the form below to check in. Check-ins must include a photo of you or your bike at the challenge site with the 2024 bandanna. All participants must be registered IAMC Challenge Members. Leave a description of your ride and share road conditions — snow, water, obstacles, and tips for future riders are all appreciated.
Replying to another person's check-in is encouraged, but take care not to accidentally create your own check-in.
The stated difficulty is an estimate. Rating your experience helps future riders stay safe. You alone are responsible for the safety of your ride.
23 Check-Ins
Stop 5 on the Sunday drive. I have ridden by this more times than I would like to count. Good reason to stretch the legs. The FS camp just down the road has a great well where I normally stop to fill the water bottle.
I rode today with Alex Crane on a 340-mile loop that saw temps as low as 52 degrees and as high as 104 degrees. Fun ride on the pavement.
We came into Lowman from Atlanta, which was a beautiful ride along the river. If you're coming up 21 it's pavement the whole way with plenty-o-twisties.
The lady at the store was super friendly, be sure to pick up something from them when you are there.
We rode in from the north via NF-582 Bear Valley Rd. Historical marker is right on HWY 21 and is easy to access. The Lowman Merc nearby has fuel and cold drinks/snacks.
Came in from Bear Valley coming from Stanley. Very fun road in! High speed and flowy
A friend just got into riding, so I took him on the Banks-Loman loop and nabbed the Lowman and Idaho City sites along the way.
Last stop on a five day 770 mile trip. First long trip 2 up with my wife. Living the dream.
Great spin into Lowman after tagging Thorn Cr Lookout and Pilot Peak. Perfect weather--upper 70's and minimal traffic.
Last stop on my loop through Garden Valley, Lowman and Idaho City. Nice day ride with a couple of side trips along the way.
Stopped at the Ranger Station instead of the Histerical marker, ≠Close enough??
What a goof ball I am!... I knew I needed to ride to Lowman for this challenge site, but didn't review the site details before leaving home, so thinking I just needed to ride to Loman; I ended getting my picture at the Lowman School!... what a doofus. I also rode my Victory Cruiser to this challenge site... so give me more demerits for that!... 🙂
Banks, Lowman, Idaho City Loop, always a fun and senic way to spend a Saturday morning. Roads Clear, still a decent amount of snow on the summits.

Part of the lowman loop that I uave been riding for years. Just never spent the time looking at the sides of the road. I may have slowed down in the last 5 or so years. This was a easy ride just a little north of the banks turn off on the right side of the road. They have fuel stations nearby also.
Did the Emmett-Banks-Lowman-Idaho City loop today. Added Emmett to the loop due to the Slope Road check-in. It was a perfect day to ride this 180 mile loop. I was surprised Lowman was only founded in 1911...same year as John Browning's .45 Auto was invented. If you don't have a 1911, get one! 🙂

Start of my big loop.
top off gas
Watch out for the deep sand at the turn out! I almost lost it!

A welcome break at the mercantile after the ride back from Chalis.
Got this on the way home from Challis

Quick loop ride to hit a couple points and get out of town for a few.
