30 – Bison Jump Historical Marker
From HMDB.com:
Before settlers came to Idaho in 1860, Buffalo used to roam through this valley. Most of them had left here by 1840. After they acquired Spanish horses, eighteenth century Shoshone buffalo hunters could drive a small herd over a cliff to make their work easier. Directly north of here, an old buffalo jump, used before mining commenced in this region, can be seen clearly. Archaeologists also have found stone weapons factories near it.

Stop 1 on the return from Challis to Boise. Love to imagine the scene this must have been back in the day. Man there are a lot of curves between here and home.
Almost missed this one
I think of tatanka as a critter on the other side of the Continental Divide. I learn something new every day.
another easy one, cool story
good for a leg stretch
just off the main road
I turned back early from the twin peaks climb, and it turned out I was wise per Chatty’s description of the worst of it!
easy ride after the terror that was Twin Peaks!
Easy access right off the road. Challis is a nice little town. I could picture Bison roaming this valley back in the day. Clever hunting strategy by the Shoshone. Bad weather cut our visit short. I would like to look around for stone weapon artifacts next time out there.
Had no time to hang around due to a big storm on us, but would love to come back and check it out better. We ended up camping at Challis hotsprings near by to hunker down. It was a welcome surprise. Recommend that place for sure!
Beautiful part of the state.
One of the best routes leaving Stanley.
