46 – Johnny Sack’s Cabin

The Johnny Sack Cabin, located at Big Springs near Island Park, Idaho, is a testament to remarkable craftsmanship and historical significance. Built between 1932 and 1935 by German immigrant Johnny Sack, this log bungalow showcases intricate woodwork and unique bark-covered furnishings. Despite standing just under five feet tall, Sack’s meticulous attention to detail is evident throughout the cabin, from handcrafted furniture to a functional water-wheel that once generated electricity for the home.

Visitors can explore the cabin from mid-June through mid-September, gaining insight into Sack’s life and the era’s architectural styles. The cabin’s picturesque setting at the headwaters of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River adds to its charm, making it one of the most photographed sites in Island Park. In recognition of its cultural importance, the cabin was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

It's a long ride from Kuna to Island Park on a DR, lol. It was closed for the season. Regardless, it was a beautiful area.

First stop on our 2nd day of riding. We trailed to Ashton, ID to avoid dull highway miles and to save our butts. (literally). There were lots our tourists here.

The site is really fun with lots of tourists. If you come in from the north you will hit gravel, but from the south it's paved. Easy easy.

Nice ride, cool looking cabin. The road that went into the forest and the cabin was closed for construction, so we couldn't get in close without walking a ways in. It was quite busy too.

These 3 sites are close to home for me so had a fun afternoon ride to check them off. This cabin is pretty cool to go through. Been here many times. Did not go in today. Still a fair amount of snow around but all the roads are clear. It's all paved to here from the south road but the north big springs loop road is gravel so you can get a little of both of you make the loop.
