I decided to try to finish the challenge this week, as I was worried there might be a few more fires that could shut down some of the more remote areas. Blue Haven was the one I was most concerned about, as section 7 had not yet been opened, and I had missed it earlier this year while doing the northern challenge points due to snow. I drove my truck up from Nampa to Clarkia and then about 20 miles down Graves Creek Road. With hindsight, I should really have just parked as soon as possible because it turned out to be much quicker on the bike than in the truck.
Anyway, it was about a 40-mile out-and-back from where I parked. There was heavy logging traffic, and several trucks were driving up the middle of the road, making it hard to avoid. I remember the last section being rocky up to the cabin, and I was glad I was on my 390 rather than my GSA. It would certainly be possible on a big bike, but you would have to be a bit more careful than on a light dualsport. On the way down, I almost ran into a moose coming around a corner, and there were a lot of deer playing chicken or frogger, whichever is more appropriate. There was absolutely no traffic on the way back, as it looks like they shut down earlier because of the heat.
